Ethnic or Asian Rhinoplasty
Although each rhinoplasty patient has different goals, certain ethnic groups share similar goals when it comes to their goals. A skilled plastic surgeon can work with you to gain an understanding of what techniques need to be administered to help you reach your desired look. Ethnic rhinoplasty is a type of rhinoplasty that is focused on meeting the goals of non-Caucasians, such as Asian rhinoplasty.
What are the Overall Goals of Asian Rhinoplasty?
Although the goal of many rhinoplasty procedures among Caucasian patients is to make the overall appearance of the nose smaller, there are many Asian patients who want just the opposite. They desire a look that extends the height of the nose. With this type of rhinoplasty, there needs to be adequate cartilage taken from the nose to carry out the process, but there are times when this isn’t possible. In these circumstances, cartilage can be harvested from different sites that include the ear and the rib. In addition, there are cases when one area won’t have sufficient cartilage so another area will be used as well.
Improving the Nasal Tip and Projection
Many Asian patients seek a rhinoplasty because they want to correct their flat, wide nasal tip to gain more definition. A plastic surgeon may add tissue to structure and support the nasal tip. In addition, adding definition and projection to the nasal tip can bring a more appealing balance to the face.
Narrowing the Nasal Bridge
When an individual has a wide nasal bridge, it often makes the appearance of the nose seem flat. Many Asian patients want to narrow the nasal bridge to make it more projected and refined. However, it is important to consult with a skilled plastic surgeon who can administer the procedure subtly to achieve facial harmony but retain ethnic character.
Nasal Lengthening
Nasal lengthening is a common with Asian rhinoplasty. This is especially true if an individual wants a nose shape with a more Caucasian-look. If this technique is combined with other rhinoplasty techniques, the result will look more like a Caucasian nose. However, before an individual chooses to follow through with an Asian rhinoplasty, it is important to remember that these alterations will greatly influence the balance and overall appearance of the face.
What Type of Anaesthesia is Used for an Asian Rhinoplasty?
In most circumstances, general anaesthesia will be used for an Asian rhinoplasty. However, some patients prefer intravenous sedation. Your plastic surgeon and anaesthesiologist will discuss which type of sedation is best suited for your needs.
How Long Will it Take to See the Final Results?
It could take several months to one year for the final results to surface after an Asian rhinoplasty. However, patients will notice slight chances and improvements as the cartilage and tissue starts to heal.
Are There Challenges to an Asian Rhinoplasty?
One challenge that plastic surgeons may encounter during an Asian rhinoplasty is weak tip cartilage and thick nasal skin. Thick skin can prolong healing, and it can also cause excess scar tissue when it isn’t performed by a skilled plastic surgeon.
Who are Good Candidates for an Asian Rhinoplasty?
Good candidates for an Asian rhinoplasty will be in overall good health and shouldn’t smoke. If you are a smoker and want to have the procedure, you should stop as soon as possible. Smoking can extend healing time. In addition, certain medications can also cause excessive bleeding, such as medications that contain aspirin or salicylates, which could include Motrin, Advil, or Alka-Seltzer. Those who want to have the procedure should also have realistic goals and a positive attitude.
Recovery After an Asian Rhinoplasty
The recovery after an Asian rhinoplasty is relatively quick. When the procedure is carried out by an experienced plastic surgeon, there is typically minimal bruising and mild swelling. However, bruising that does surface will typically diminish in about a week. For the first week following the procedure, a patient may need to wear a plastic splint on his or her nose. However, splints aren’t typically required when work is only done on the nasal tip. When the tip of the nose is worked on, a patient may need to tape the nose for about a week, which will reduce swelling, and it will ensure that the nose heals evenly.
In addition, a patient will need to keep his or her nose dry for the first week after the procedure to keep the splint from getting wet and falling off. Some patients may be advised to apply a small dressing under the nose for the first few days after the surgery to catch any nasal dripping.
Within one week, most patients can return to work and resume mild activities. After two weeks, most patients can resume moderate physical activity if the swelling goes down. However, contact sports should be avoided for about six months following the surgery to prevent injury to the nose.
How to Choose an Asian Rhinoplasty Surgeon
Although many plastic surgeons have the ability to administer a rhinoplasty, there are few who are skilled enough to perform an Asian rhinoplasty. For the best results, an individual will need to find a plastic surgeon who specializes in Asian rhinoplasty.
If you are thinking of getting an Asian rhinoplasty, it is important to choose a plastic surgeon who has the experience to successfully carry out the procedure. At the Lasky Clinic, Dr. Frankel is board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Facial and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery. Hi Jhilmil,
Great post! Good piece of information. Recently a friend of mine had Rhinoplasty. Though the reason for him to have it was a bit different. He had a scuffle with his neighbor and got a cut on his nose. Doctors suggested him to go for Rhinoplasty in order to diminish the cut mark which was quite deep. I am glad to have got so much of information from your post.
Thanks for sharing this post. Have a good day. :)
