How do I maintain an Active and Healthy Lifestyle?
Life of the metro is so swift that at times it leaves me numb. Multiple rows of running cars, masses striving to catch the metro, minds occupied with the strategies for revenues and presentations, hearts occupied with the kids back at home. Between this hustle-bustle of life, as a corporate woman, I always strived to put my best foot forward. Be it gaining accolades in the professional world or getting the tag of “best mum”, we at times toil ourselves too hard. Our hearts and minds are always laden with ample preoccupied thoughts so much that we get minimal time for ourselves.
You might feel that your lifestyle is way too active, but, are we really doing enough to inculcate the right “Physical activity” in our Lifestyle? Active living is a step towards healthy living and it embeds physical and fun activities in our lifestyle. It not just prevents one from diseases but also helps in good Mental health.
You don’t have to be a Marathoner or a super active 2 hours gym person, but what you need is just 30 minutes. Ditch the laptops and phones, get up and just get moving. Let your gadgets feel the heat while you sweat out. Don’t fret if you don’t have a specific workout style, even I don’t have one. I’m a juggler and so this metro has taught me to mix it up at times. So choose activities that suit your lifestyle.
Tips for Active Lifestyle :
1. Choose activities that suit your lifestyle and the ones that you love :
Yes, that’s really critical, as that will help you maintain the continuity of your activities. If you don’t love cycling, there is no logic to push your body for it. You’ll end up quitting that very soon and disturb your routine. The best way is to make a list of activities, as Jogging, Swimming, Cycling, Aerobics, Zumba, Gardening, Playing sports and more. Look around and start with the activities, you would love to repeat! Yes, those which you want to repeat might be daily!
2. Exercise Daily: 30 minutes a day :
This 30minute rule has actually kept me sane and helped me flush out lots of toxins. Here is what I mean by a 30-minute regime :
- 10-minute brisk walk early in the morning or Yoga. That calm nature and green surroundings soothe me all the more for an energetic start.
- 10 minutes of play, be it badminton or Lawn Tennis or maybe skipping or swimming. With the sweat, you’re also cleaning your body, mind, and soul with that unwanted clutter. At times, for me this, 10 minute converts into complete 20-30 minutes (that’s an add on for me). Weekends can also be reserved for cycling.
- A simple 10-minute evening stroll or a relaxing night walk while discussing the positives of your day with your baby or a life partner. A calm stroll with your pet also works wonders. It relieves any stress and stimulates a harmonious life.
Workout for your heart, be it whatever! Plan ahead for bad weather and keep some exercise equipment at home.
3. Ditch the Lift and escalators :
How was our life before Lifts came into existence? I remember the room for me and my sister was on the 3rd floor and from morning to evening, I had more than 10-12 rounds. But, I never sighed! We had the stamina back then, and this is what we need to rebuild and restore. Ditch any lift, be it at your workplace or maybe for your flat on the 4th floor.
Motivate your colleagues as well to opt for stairs, gossiping will help you not even realize that you climbed that many stairs, I vouch. During my whole pregnancy, I opted for stairs to reach my work station on the Second Floor. Despite my seniors asked me to opt for a lift, I never did (until I was heavily exhausted) even till my 9th month. It was a motivation that helped me lead a very active and healthy pregnancy. Maintain a healthy weight at every stage of your life!
So, a simple reminder, Take the stairs, again for a #healthyYou!

4. Dancing :
Who doesn’t loves that? Though I might not be a perfect dancer, I love my twisting, turning, and rocking with some good music. Zumba classes during the weekends will bring on that added zest to the monotony of Life. Dancing is a great way of burning those extra calories build during the day and it is fun too!
5. Quick easy Stretching exercises, while taking a 5-minute break :
Believe me, those revenue Projections and Marketing plans are way too taxing. And sitting continuously for long durations only drains our productivity. Even if you are a SAHM, ensure that you take 5 minutes stretching break every after every hour. Go for quick and easy stretching exercise routines and opt for 5 minutes of stretching at the workplace. Try it out for 15-20 days [no cheat days] and see if your productivity improves. Take 5 minutes break and include these stretches as neck and shoulder stretch, back of the leg stretch (extend your legs and try to touch the toes), Overhead stretch, Wrist stretches, Ball squeezes. If possible you can also go for single-leg squats during this break.

I opt for activities which give me pleasure and are fun. Also, I keep on changing them monthly, so as to give me a new direction. These might sound very simple tips, but believe me, they are quite effective in the chaotic life we lead in a metro. These hacks will not just help you be physically fit but also will help you with mental peace, which we all have missed overtime!
Until Then,
Get up, get going for your easy stretches!

Most of us have sedentary lifestyles but it is so detrimental for our physical and mental health. Agree with your tips to stay active. Sane advice to maintain sanity. Yes daily exercise is must in this day and age when one eats junk food and lead a sedentary life.
Good start Jhilmil, I always keep saying it exertion is not exercise, we may get tired but it has no health benefit as it causes stress. I always do and recommend these stretches sitting at workplace. we sit for so long and knowing that how much adverse effect it has on body, we must have a active life.
