The story of Fir Tree – Christmas Tree!
There has been many different and beautiful versions of the Christmas tree from the history narratives. No one is rather sure as to when were the Fir trees first used and symbolised as Christmas trees. But people say that it began some 1000 years ago in Northern Europe. Many countries and many versions, but the one we have heard the most and loved it is shared below. It has a beautiful moral to teach to ourselves and our kids!
“Once in the forest, there lived a poor woodcutter with his wife and two lovely children. Though they were poor, they were all very warm hearted and loved each other. It was a cold, snowy day, when they were sitting besides the firewood warming themselves and having their daily breads. Suddenly they saw a poor child looking at them. With torn sheet of clothes, he was all alone, shivering in that snowy cold.
The children of the woodcutter were sad to see him this way and they asked him to sit and warm his hands near the firewood. Though they themselves didn’t had extra woollen clothes, one of them gave his warm clothes to the poor child. They also shared their daily bread with the hungry child. The poor child was taken to the room and given their bed with warm coverings to sleep, while the woodcutters children slept on the bench that day.
For the first time they realized that they were so lucky to have a small bed with blanket to cover and that a day’s sacrifice for the poor child can be the best they could do. They were sure that the poor little stranger would really be happy in the warm bed and clothes.
Just few hours had passed, when the brother-sister heard some soft music and light emanating from their doors. They saw a strange child, all dressed up in golden attire. And it was then he said “I’m the Christ-child” and I wander and bring happiness to good children. You gave me all the happiness as a poor child and sacrificed your beds for me. I’m here to “Thank you” back. And then, a fir tree grew near the house and the Christ child broke a twig from it and said that “this tree shall bring in fortunes for you all”. This fir tree grew to become a Christmas Tree laden with silver and golden fruits and nuts every year.”
The moral/message I love is that it helps inculcate, that any one who helps a child in distress, it will be counted as a deed done to the Lord Christ himself. And so, every year Christmas is decorated and illuminated to spread the love and joy.
Here comes some really simple Christmas Tree Crafts for Christ’s priceless Little children, done by me and my pre schooler with equal enthusiasm.

4. Frilly Fir – Christmas Tree :
This was a super quick round by me and my son.
How to make paper Christmas tree craft:
- Make a cone , stick its open edges and keep it aside.
- Now, cut 5-6 slabs of green sheet (approx. 3cms)
- Pick one of the slab and start giving it a very fine cut (as shown below). Repeat the same for all the slabs.
- Try to separate up the cuts and give them a rounded curve slowly by moving scissor along their way.
- Start pasting the slabs one by one on the cone in a circular and upward moving fashion. (Start pasting from bottom to up)
- Make a cylinder to create a base to have a standing Christmas Tree.
- Decorate as you wish.
It is really quick and take 12-15 minutes to complete it. Simple, DIY Christmas Tree idea, isn’t it?

Don’t you agree, what could have been more simple than this? But this was enjoyed by my son, as he got to learn “Spray painting”, which had not been taught to him.
