Did you know that Rape is amongst the top 5 most common crimes against women in India? And the irony is that many rapes go unreported in villages, towns and even in metro cities. I see everybody so-called “powerful” speaking about Women empowerment. What exactly is Women Empowerment? When we haven’t been able to make India a safe country for women, how can Empowerment rule? This post is a reaction against the #PriyankaReddy case.
Women don’t need the highly “politicised” fancy term “empowerment”, as this will come along with Safety, Respect, Care and non-objectification!
Shocked, furious, bereaved, horrified! #PriyankaReddy case got me the shockwaves, just like every other woman in this country. It once again numbed my heart and mind, giving me the bone-chilling emotions. A very dear friend told me when the MEN in this country are safe, why aren’t WOMEN?
? Is it just because women are considered to be weak and termed as “objects” for fun and enjoyment?
? Is it because our society has failed miserably in making men Emotionally strong? Don’t get me wrong, by this term, I mean that our upbringing for boys has always focussed on omitting their emotions (as they grow), rather than accepting the fact that boys and men also have emotions. We never see the fact that even men can cry and show their emotions. We don’t expect men to be depressed. We don’t expect men to show their sensitive sides. Why?
Or, is it because of the lame action and poor implementation of the stringent governance?
What does this woman feel?
I ride pillion and I walk on the streets too!
I ride as the night falls and even in the early mornings!
I may wear a saree and I may also wear a skirt,
So does that make my life unsafe? Well, not just mine, but lacs of Indian women. Is any woman really spared, be it minor?
Last week reported not just one, but 5 rape cases across India including a 11year old girl (who was murdered after the rape)
These horrendous incidents can make any woman feel unsafe and weak, be it today’s smart millennial woman or a girl working on her dreams to take over this century.
Well I’m not here to judge, but what bothers me the most is :
Apathy in #PriyankaReddy case:
The apathy of police, officials and at times even the layman. Had the complaint been taken seriously at the first station where Priyanka’s parents approached past 10 pm, the outcome “could” have been different. They had access to all the technologies, CCTV cameras, which could have made tracking faster. I still wonder, instead of trying to get hands-on “eloping” with her boyfriend attitude, a little serious task could have saved her precious life.
Sensitive, is what every human needs to be once again.
Faking Social Mindset:
Our social mindset of “boys will be boys”. This looks like a societal failure, that despite such uproar every time these devils are lurking in an opportunity to quench their thirst. How does every time a girl and women are asked to bring a change in their lifestyle rather than these devils? When a mind is full of filth, how can anyone feel safe?
Capital punishments:
Well, to how many and in what duration? At times the culprits are not even nabbed, they commit a heinous crime and become underground. Then why do we talk about Capital punishment? One case gets Media attention, but what about those hundreds of cases, which are yet to open up their files? We need stringent implementations, modifications and special bodies to address these cases with the severest outcome.
Most of these crimes are committed by men in the age group 20-40! Their desires provoke them to commit such horrendous crimes, which means that they don’t have control over their actions! And we get right to the basics.
Education:
I feel sorry for the parents of the main suspect in Priyanka Reddy Murder Case, who insisted that “Their son is not of this kind”. Which “kind” are they talking about? Don’t you feel that RESPECT FOR WOMEN should be taught right from the grass-root level of primary education? Why are women objectified? Why are women considered to be the weaker of the two sexes? Education can change a lot of that. The right exposure of children at home, the way we deal with women in our day to day life sows the seed in the budding mindsets. See your own actions, as that is what your children are going to learn and act one day.
Awareness:
Awareness of the Sexual harassment act should be mandated while schooling. Every girl and boy must be aware of laws and the punishments in case of “any crime”. The quantum of safety measures (with more women officials, inspectors on the roads) for Indian women matters! Self-defence and Law training need to be mandatory, in every Government and Private school. I really applaud the appointment of Marshals in Delhi buses for the safety of women, by Delhi Government. Every street, every park needs to be under a strict, functional scanner. Can’t this “powerful” country do this?
I also feel the concept of single-sex schools should be abolished right from primary education. Perception needs to be changed as kids grow. Women are not any objects to be looked upon or to be teased. Never forget, a woman is the one who birthed you!
Time is already over, there are so many agonizing thoughts running in the mind of this Indian woman. This post will remain unfinished until every Indian woman feels safe in her “OWN COUNTRY”
