National Rail Museum
Museums for kids? Nah! Is that what you think moms and dads? Then National Rail Museum of Delhi is there to prove you wrong. An amusing museum, with real-time toy rides and numerous exploratory evolutions of Rail, showcased in an exciting way, Rail Museum, is a family favorite for us. Ever quarter, it looks like a mandate (from our kid), to have lots of fun there.
And let me tell you, it is an equal delight for the adults. The incredible display of India’s Rail heritage real-life size exhibits of locomotives, coaches, holds a string historical lineage.

1. Witness the Rare exhibits:
Did you know the oldest working steam locomotive? Well, Fairy Queen, the oldest steam locomotive is here to make your journey enthralling. Also, don’t forget to witness the Patiala State Mono Rail and the John Morris Fire Engine. And Hola, if this doesn’t excite you, then get ready for this steam engine ride every Thursday and Saturday.
The vintage locomotives, giving you a sense of Royalty, like the saloon of Prince of Wales and various Maharajas at their times.
2. 3D Virtual Tours:
Being a historical museum, don’t expect it to lag behind in technology. National Rail Museum offers you 3D Coach Ride in its Indoor section, to experience different Locomotives and coaches. The charges of the same are Rs100/- for adults and kids(from 3 years) on weekdays and Rs200 during weekends.
3. Real-Time Rides:
Oh yes, it is not just a museum with exhibits to see, but it’s one to give you all the experiences. How about climbing on the Toy Train, we had a ride in, during our childhood? Relive those memories with the Joy of Toy Train ride. Blow the whistle, play with the lights as you go round and round on the tracks singing.
4. Interactive Model of Miniature India and Indoor Gallery:
The way this Miniature India is depicted makes it one of the most exciting and worth mentioning section of Rail Museum. As the name says, it beautifully showcases the vivid landscapes of India. It’s an interesting attempt to witness the working models of trains, right from Goods Train, to Steam Trains (in mountains), to even the Bullet trains. You’ll also find a lovely Model Cricket Stadium for the delight of cricket fans!
Indoor Gallery is also equally interactive, not just with models, but also some games and well-maintained collectives.
5. Rail Garden and The Rails Restaurant:
The Outside gallery encompasses this not-to-be-missed rail Garden amidst the beautiful green surroundings. How about having some good food while the steam engine chugs around the restaurant? Well, that’s a unique feel at this Food junction, inspired by India’s Rail history.
It also houses a Souvenir shop, having Train models, Books, Apparels (Caps, tee’s), posters as well. 2018 also witnessed Summer Camp at Rail Museum for kids, engaging kids in varied activities.

Outdoor areas can be hot in summer’s, so it is recommended to visit the National Rail Museum in the morning hours, before noon.
How to Reach Rail Museum?
INA and Jorbagh metro stations are the closest. Various DTC buses also have a stop here. Located in Chanakyapuri, it is very easy to reach via Auto as well.

Yay! I have been to this museum a couple of times and every time it amazes me. A nostalgic post for me Jhilmil.
I am regretting after reading this post, Jhilmil as someone suggested us to visit it during our trip to India last November but we could not make it. This looks such a wonderful place where kids would have enjoyed and learned so much.
